WordPress 5.0

On 6th December WordPress released the much awaited version 5.0. This is a major upgrade that has been the subject of heated discussions in the open-source community.

The most significant change in this release is the built-in editor – Gutenberg. The original editor was first released 14 years ago. Unchanged in the last 10 years, it is clearly overdue for replacement. Here is WordPress’ intro.

If you are updating your site to 5.0 and using the Vacation Soup plugin you will still see the familiar editor. We made this decision to allow the new technology to settle in. You can still try Gutenberg by using the WordPress built-in post editor, and your posts will still be syndicated.

This post was written with Gutenberg, and I have to say it is very easy to use.

We will add Gutenberg to the Vacation Soup plugin early in 2019, so it is worth familiarising yourself with it.

Frank Tabone, a regular writer from Gozo, shared this useful article from ThemeIsle explaining the Gutenberg Block editor,  they also have a more high level introduction to what it is all about.
